Someone once said-"if you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always gotten". Being a jew and very much pro Israel , I am,however, profoundly agianst violence. Any form of violence. It seems that we ( as humanity) keep on taking the same road over and over again, thinking"this time it will take me in a different direction". Well- it will not. We may need to re think the approaches. We also need to remember the past- if "war" actually worked as a resolution to all problems- we would have had one and all problems would have been resolved. Since we keep on having wars and expecting a different resolution- we may need to question our "civilized "mind and our decision making. We still lack a deep intelligence of the mind and definately of the heart -since we keep on making the same mistakes. War and violence is not the final solution- yet ALL OF US are active participants. Whether by watching the news, sending our sons and daughters to the front or being active consumers of the "spoils" of war.

Wherever we live in the world, our past affects the present. Yes, sometimes we need to see where we've been to know where we're going, it's just that we tend not to see the whole map, we only pick out the bits we know that keep us on the same narrow track. I live in the UK, and am constantly amused by BNP type people who have a fixed idea about what constitutes being British. We(our ancestors)all originally came from other parts of the globe, and they weren't the fixed bordered countries we know them as today.
Our constant movement in time and place makes us who we are, not the brown patch of earth we stand on. Our culture today is a mishmash of previous cultures who we shared our lives with. If we(our culture)stand still we won't grow and learn, thus we become self absorbed and inward looking and left behind.

@ Alan and Greg:
I realize that the more common belief is that life ISN'T fair... Believe me, I grew up into that belief just like everyone else, heard it from my mother and father as well. What I am reffering to is a different approach to life, different than what your parents, teachers and society may have taught you. I know it's kind of hard to grasp at first, (that's why i have been told that I live in my own world), but as I explained in a previous post, I am slowly realizing (and very grateful to learn) that I am not alone.

By the way, this discussion kind of reminds me of a video that has been making the rounds in the States. It is specifically about America but I believe you could apply it to the rest of the west as well.

I have to agree with Alan here.

One of the "Life's truths" one learns when growing up is that Life isn't Fair.

What "should be" is irrelivant.

"I believed that life 'should' be fair"

Then you mom didn't do her job did she?

I believed that I should have won the last lottery. But 'should' has never accomplished anything has it.

Israel needs to find "its balls" if it is going to survive the next century. Not only Israel though but all of what we term "the West" needs to find "our balls".

Here is a great video that lays it all out. Now it is about America but since I listed all the names above (the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites) I believe it isn't that hard to imagine how it the same sentiment can be adapted to Israel.

People of Israel remember who you are. I believe the people of all the West need to remember who we are and what we have had to do in order to get where we are today. If we fail to remember who we are and what got us where we are we will not be able to survive.

There's a difference between how how individuals should treat the individuals they come into contact with and what great nations need to do in order to survive and prosper. Sure individuals should love their enemy, pray for them.

And when soldiers act, they need to act not out of anger but out of duty.

Here is an extreme example but I believe extreme in order to stress the point the story was making.

"A samurai had for many years been searching for the assassin of his warlord. Finally, he found the man, cornered him in the barn and disarmed him. As he was about to plunge the sword into his heart, the assassin spit in the samurai's face. The samurai sheathed his sword, walked to his horse, mounted and rode away."

Why did he do that?

Because had he killed the man at that point he would have killed him out of personal anger and not because of his sacred duty. He would have enjoyed killing the man.

So, yeah, love your enemies. It doesn't mean you don't kill your enemies. Just be sure not to have hate in your heart when you do it.

To the commentor above calling himself "Jesus", remember your own words:

“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? (Matthew 5:43-47)
